Art Journal Prep and Process
So I’m taking
Jane Davenport online class:
Supplies Me. I took one of her other classes:
I Heart Drawingover the winter months while I was awaiting the arrival of our son. Jane is a great teacher, incredibly positive and endlessly encouraging. In the process of learning about fashion illustration, she’s also made me think about my own teaching style. I love teaching, but I hate grading and the criticism implied by standard A to F grades. This makes me think about what I want to do next. Wouldn’t you know that that next may have just presented itself? Some friends of mine have begun talking about an empty space and the possibility of starting a gallery/coop/association. Who knows, maybe I’ll get a chance to teach again but without all the pressures of the traditional collegiate model of pass fail.
Here’s my first assignment for Jane’s Supplies Me class. Week 1′s assignment was to “learn to love the mess.” She wanted us to create a experimental textured journal page with a gesso and a face. I’m really not used to drawing on a textured surface, haven’t done it since my college days. And well drawing faces from my imagination without a reference?! Totally Hard! Here it is though…

PS. I used the app FrameArtist on my iPhone to make the little collages.
